Abstract
This chapter aims at exploring the common traits and the differences between Italy and Portugal concerning two key elements of this book: LGBTQ+ politics and healthcare systems. In the first part, I offer a brief account of the influences of Catholic culture, familism, and austerity politics in the two countries. I then move to analyse the context of LGBTQ+ rights, where Italy and Portugal show starkly different situations. In this part, healthcare systems and politics related to LGBTQ+ people in healthcare are also described. I dedicate the last part of the chapter to describing how this research was conducted, in particular the methodological tools, the challenges encountered, and my positioning within the field of research. The chapter aims at locating the encounter between theoretical framework and empirical analysis in a specific time and place.
