Abstract
Sir Edmund Hillary’s transformative efforts on behalf of Himalayan landscapes and communities mark a paradigm shift in development assistance: bottom-up, participatory, sustained, and devoid of political, ideological, financial, or spiritual agenda. Hillary’s development projects were undertaken in the same spirit of camaraderie and adventure as his mountaineering exploits, and it is this conjunction of adventure and philanthropy that explains the viral success of the Hillary Model of development assistance. Around the world, Hillary’s work has been emulated by amateurs and professionals, mountaineers and montologists, voluntourists, and grassroots NGOs. Although gratitude is not required by these development adventurers, Hillary’s legacy can be sustained only if we recognize those who carry it on. The Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Legacy Medal, created with the enthusiastic support of Sir Edmund himself, is a means to that end. The selection of Medalists not only reaffirms the original Hillary Model of development assistance, it also recognizes the evolving challenges and the imaginative strategies that must be deployed if we are to meet them successfully.
