Abstract
El Mirador cave is a key site for understanding the settlement processes of the communities of Late prehistory. In 2009, excavation began of a Chalcolithic collective burial in a small chamber in the NE corner of the cave. The deposit yielded numerous remains from individuals of different ages and both sexes. This study primarily aimed to establish the demographic and biological profile of the population, as well as to evaluate its health status. The results obtained indicated the presence of a heterogeneous group with high infant mortality. In terms of pathologies, various diseases (e.g., degenerative joint disease, congenital disorders, metabolic diseases, and skeletal trauma) have been documented, mainly related to the lifestyle and daily activities of this human group. Overall, the incidence of the different pathologies is low, but taken together, our results suggest that some individuals from El Mirador cave may have suffered from certain ailments and diseases that could suggest a diminished quality of life. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that valuable information can be obtained from commingled skeletal assemblages.
