Abstract

In her Epilogue, “‘Etching on Glass’: Carol Shields’s Re-Vision” Aritha van Herk addresses Carol Shields as a writer, reader, and creative writing teacher in terms of the metaphor of “etching.” Through an exploratory close reading and ficto-critical response to Anne and Nicolas Giardini’s 2016 edition of Shields’ comments on writing gathered in Startle and Illuminate: Carol Shields on Writing, the paper explores how to implement the wisdom and experience of this dexterous writer.
