Abstract

Krishna Swamy Dara is a political scientist based at Jamia Millia Islamia University, where he teaches political theory and Indian political thought. Born in India, he received his PhD from the Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2007. His thesis “The Idea of Minority in B.R. Ambedkar’s Thought,” which was awarded the best PhD in 2007 by the Nirman Foundation, explores the political thinking of Indian intellectual B.R. Ambedkar. Swamy was also a post-Doctoral researcher at Humboldt University and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. In this essay, Swamy revisits his years in New Delhi as a young student coming from a lower-middle-class Dalit group in a meritocratic university, to his later interest in the political philosophy of colonialism and the life and work of B.R. Ambedkar.
