Abstract

A transport system must be based on its characteristics which define it and determine its performance and quality. Any failure of the system may affect the safety and security of a society. The rail system is one of the main components of society and one of the basic pillars of its economy. Rail transport is, and will remain, one of the main transport systems in the world, and the future of this system depends on an understanding of the main concepts that define it and on the synergy of its components. Mobility currently faces significant challenges and several factors affect the way people move. These factors are usually linked to the human lifestyle and mobility needs, leading to social constraints and environmental problems, network congestion and undersized transport infrastructure. In this context, the high potential of the rail system within clean and sustainable modes of transport offers the opportunity to increase. The paper summarizes the fundamental concepts that define the interconnections between the attractiveness of the rail transport system, mobility, safety and security. A system perspective on railway requirements in the context of increasing attractiveness is presented in this study. This work provides an overview of the current state and trends of what can be defined as the basis for sustainable and secure mobility.
