Abstract

As the global tourism industry restarts in the wake of the pandemic, the industry’s research and development agendas are being reshaped, presenting opportunities for more sustainable approaches to tourism development in Africa. Tourism workers are central to the effectiveness of the leadership process geared toward the actualization of tourism development strategies. Yet, these tourism workers are under-prioritized in research and development agendas which affects outcomes. For sustained and inclusive development of Africa’s tourism, the work environment needs to evolve toward an employee-centered one given the potential this focus presents for organizations to thrive, contribute to the repositioning of their economies for sustained growth as well as shape the future of tourism in Africa. The implications of tourism leadership for private and public sector organizations are presented. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research focused on tourism workers as key stakeholders in the attainment of sustainable tourism development in Africa.
