Abstract
If we are to attain the sustainable development goals by 2030, development in Africa must be equitable and sustainable. The private sector, operating within a conducive environment in Africa, through a framework of responsible business practice, can provide the blueprint, the leadership and support the development of social equity policies that will flatten the curve toward an equitable and just society. This chapter looks at the concept of social equity, specifically how social equity policies, when adopted as a responsible business practice by multinational corporations (MNCs), can help address employment and poverty reduction, health and wellbeing, and gender diversity and inclusion. A qualitative methodology will be adopted—narrating approaches adopted by MNCs in Africa, using data collected from publicly available company documents. The ultimate aim is to explore the social equity policies that MNCs operating in Africa have adopted and its difference in their internal and external communities.
