Abstract
Pre-retrieval prediction approaches estimate the quality of the search results, before the search takes place. Thus, only the query terms, associated with some pre-defined statistics gathered for all the terms in the vocabulary, can be used for prediction. Such methods are easy to compute but are usually inferior to post-retrieval approaches since they do not take the retrieval method into account. The (usually short) query alone is often not expressive enough for reliable prediction ofthe quality of the search results.
