Abstract
Many nations, including most Western nations, are facing major overhauls of their healthcare systems as their populations are tending to be older, which will increase the prevalence of disorders and ailments related to aging. Given the current practice, these nations will not have the capacity to support these older populations or the chronic conditions associated with aging, including dementia. The current healthcare model of removing older adults from their homes and placing them into long-term care facilities is neither financially sustainable (since the proportion of caregivers relative to the growing demand is decreasing) [Bharucha et al., 2009], nor is it desirable. Technologies are being designed to help older adults “age-in-place” by providing different types of support for people who are still able to live at home independently, but require some light assistance.
