Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an IT-based innovation that could be implemented in various domains, such as manufacturing, logistics and healthcare. Things or objects in a particular domain can be tagged, sensed, and controlled over the Internet with technologies in object identification, wireless networks, sensors, and embedded systems. It is widely acknowledged that IoT systems are potential targets for malicious attacks, spread and actuated from the Internet to the physical world. Hence, IoT security is of utmost importance. This paper is part of a wider research project and aims to explore the factors responsible for security challenges that exist in IoT systems. A qualitative investigation was conducted by interviewing twenty IoT industry experts. The findings show that there are seven factors responsible for security challenges facing IoT systems, including a lack of IoT standards, heterogeneity, vulnerability, resource constraints, trust, pervasiveness, and manufacturing.
