Overlapping Memberships in East Africa’s Subregional Economic Organizations

Abstract

The East African Community was one of the earliest integration projects in the region. In the late 1970s, when almost all African countries had become free from colonial dependence, the EAC 1.0 disintegrated. Later, from the 1970s through the 1990s, when most integration projects on the continent were emerging, East African nations found themselves in a historical context where they had to join other integration projects, as they did not have one of their own.
