Abstract
We are living in an historic moment. These urgent times call for grounded community-driven knowledge, fusing justice and eco/climate solutions which, in fact, serve all. This chapter introduces the Breakthrough Compass, a potent navigational tool that communities are using for self-empowerment. This philosophical framework has assisted environmental justice advocates to grow from protest to agency as they grow their focus from “me” to “we,” and then to “the world we share.” It is a five-stage guide, applying proven social change philosophies that recognize our inextricable “nesting” within the web of life. We provide a case study wherein a coalition of disadvantaged San Francisco Bay Area communities emerges victorious, employing the Breakthrough Compass to create an environmental justice scenario that outperforms professional planner models and wins potential major transportation funding.
