Abstract
The authors aimed to analyze the specificities of “Brazilian racism” in football taking as a horizon the Brazilian participation in the World Cups of the first 50 years of the twentieth century. To do so, they organized the chapter in three moments: the first presents a synthesis of the historical construction of “Brazilian racism”; the second illuminates the face of inclusion of this ambiguous racism by analyzing the presence of racial debate in the Brazilian football space and the ambiguous effect of the praise for black players; finally, the third exposes the face of exclusion of Brazilian racism as it investigates the blame attributed to goalkeeper Barbosa for Brazil's defeat in the 1950 World Cup. What extent can the stereotypes impregnated in culture and reflected in football be used to explain the difference between citizens in a liberal order? The meanings attributed to the “black race” tension members of a competitive society and reveal the strategies for maintaining hierarchies inherited from slavery. They conclude that football, with its specificities, mirrors the dilemmas and ambiguities of the integration of the black population in Brazil.
