Abstract

This chapter tackles the first two decades of the twenty-first century: the unraveling of US world hegemony, the challenges faced by economic globalization, the growing socio-economic inequalities, the retreat of democracy, and the transformative forces of new technologies. Whereas these trends belong in the almost two-century unfolding of these dimensions, the potentially disruptive forces of the galloping artificial intelligence revolution and climate change single out this period’s unprecedented challenges.
