Abstract

The introduction identifies six major themes in the contemporary world, defines them, and outlines the overall trajectory of each for the last 170 years: economic globalization, world hegemony, political regime cycles, socio-economic inequality, technological breakthroughs, and climate change. Finally, the introduction explores the synergistic effects of each trend with the goal of visualizing the historical periods, sequences, and patterns that provide an understanding of contemporary history and inform our grasp of the present and beyond.
