Climate Vulnerability and Resilience in the Global South

Abstract

The southwest coastal region of Bangladesh is the most disaster-prone areas in the country. The present research evaluated the community perceptions of climate vulnerability and its multiple impacts on livelihoods through a cross-sectional survey. Multiple variant information and data were collected from 172 households through a semi-structured questionnaire survey. The study reveals that different climatic events adversely affected the community's people livelihood. Homestead, occupation, wealth and income sources are severely vulnerable to frequent tropical cyclones, riverbank erosion, coastal flooding and salinity. Household in the areas experienced a disproportionate salinity intrusion rate in the cultivable land, decreasing fertility, crop production failure, food insecurity, drinking water, and different waterborne diseases. More than 47% of respondents faced coastal flooding 2–4 times in a year. About 65% of respondents figured out tropical cyclones have become the biggest climatic problem with 3–5 times incidence per year. Most of the respondent have been evaluated the local-level adaptation strategies during hazards or disaster such as repair their houses, migrating to safe place, houses made with high mud wall with bamboo, and use potash alum to reduce risk and protect waterborne diseases. However, more than 95% participant reported that tree plantation, conservation of wetland and forest would be effective mitigation measure to combat future climate change impacts. This research findings would help the government and policymaker to better plan the climate risk assessment and landscape planning at local levels.
