Abstract

Performativity theories have seen “dressing” as a powerful tool of gender identity construction and assertion. In addition to identity creation, performativity has been used by the Hijra community of South Asia as a means of alliance creation, religious reclamation, and a precondition to political organization and empowerment. Writing a counter-narrative of gender is an act of counter-deployment of Foucauldian alliances. A similar strategy is being employed by young queer Muslims who are dressing in the Islamic queer fashion. Innovation in Islamic fashion is helping them to assert their identity in their social context and in essentially rainbow capitalist market. As a result, they have been able to reclaim not only Islamic philosophy for the Islamic third gender community but also a safe space for their political narration and organisation.
