Abstract
This chapter is a personal essay. It is a reflection on being Chinese in a South Africa that has emerged from apartheid’s oppression and enforcement of racial divisions and segregation to a contemporary period characterised by expanding migration, changing politics and new allegiances being remade all the time. These evolving dynamics inevitably leave deep imprints on the meanings of identity and a sense of community.
