Abstract
During the two decades of the 2000s, urban life has profoundly changed in Turkey under the increasing impact of both financialization and the growth of the construction sector. This combination has created new inequalities and processes of exclusion. Drawing on the ethnographic research that I carried out in 2018–2019 in Mardin, in this chapter I study how poor local women experience these new conditions of inequality and exclusion. My informants have been excluded from employment and education opportunities and they have very limited resources to cope with poverty. The ethnography brings out the challenges they experience in their daily life in this adversely transformed urban space.
An earlier draft of this research was presented on several occasions. The first one was the international conference on ‘Urban Inequalities: Ethnographic Inside’ in Corinth, Greece in 2019 with the support of Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University BAP-19-1009-043. Secondly, the paper was presented in the National Social Science Congress in Ankara, Turkey in 2019. ORCID: 0000-0002-4145-8689.
