Abstract
The purpose of the present article is to investigate the effective ways of teaching a foreign language at a non-linguistic university. At present, the increasing interest to university pedagogy stems from the commitment of training highly qualified specialists in any area of expertise. Nowadays, there is a clear contradiction between the current requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard for the foreign language education of students and the low level of their language proficiency. The reason for this is seen in the use of ineffective language training methods by teachers of foreign languages. We consider the implementation of a personal-activity approach in teaching foreign languages to students of non-linguistic faculties of NEFU. The practical use of this approach in teaching a foreign language is to form students’ linguistic, cultural and communicative competencies through the optimal employment of a basic set of native (Yakut) and Russian languages knowledge and skills. The positive transfer of knowledge and skills is a key mechanism for the basic knowledge and skills employment in mastering a foreign language by students. The concept of the linguistic interference is revealed in the context of psychological and pedagogical sciences. The solution to the problem of overcoming the linguistic and psychological interference is seen in conducting the linguistic contrastive and comparative cultural analyses of the course content. These types of analyses contribute to a favorable change in the motivational sphere of students to education, characterized by increased cognitive interest and the cognitive need for mastering a foreign language.
