Abstract

The British hoodie horror film has utilised several different landscapes, each of which demonstrates a fascinating relationship between the male characters of the narrative and their environment. Moreover, the hoodie horror’s use of landscape draws heavily on the British Gothic tradition. In this chapter, it is argued that hoodie horror’s use of the gothic landscape plays a vital role in exposing the various masculinities at odds within a hoodie horror film. This chapter hopes to utilise the dominance of the landscape in the hoodie horror narrative to investigate how contemporary issues of class and gender are framed by wider hierarchies of power, ownership and expectation. The landscape is a powerful tool for understanding the characters’ relationship with the state, their perception of class and their awareness of the wider rhetoric of which they are a part.
