Abstract
ESP has witnessed a rapid growth in the international academia, yet the studies in China are still underdeveloped, mainly concerned with the English learning motivation of undergraduates in social or natural sciences, with few studies on the motivations of art majors. Art majors possess unique features in their route to universities and their performance evaluation system. This study, with a questionnaire and an open follow-up interview on a sample of 400 undergraduates in four art colleges in China, aims to identify the motivation types of art majors. The findings revealed that art majors have seven types of motivation and a special concern with the relevance of language course to their degree courses. The pedagogical implication of art majors’ motivation for ESP design is discussed.
