Abstract

Gait impairment occurs in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease, after stroke and post-traumatically. Quantification of this impairment is necessary in diagnosis and in rehabilitation. The availability of small, cheap inertial measurements units (IMU) made such quantification feasible both in clinical and outpatient settings, for instance in the course of home based tele-rehabilitation.

The aim of this study was to create a simple system enabling verification of selected gait parameters, determined on the basis of data obtained during a patient’s treadmill walk from inertial measurements units consisting of accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer placed on lower limbs. As reference video sequence recorded simultaneously with smartphone camera was used.

The trajectory of movement of markers placed upon IMUs was obtained from video record and selected gait parameters were calculated. They have been compared with data obtained from IMU.

It was found that time parameters of gait like step time, gait cycle time, stance phase, swing phase and cadence were correctly determined from data obtained from IMUs.
