Abstract
In the early 2000s a friend suggested that I enroll in a peace education class in Tokyo organized by Teachers College Columbia University. I was interested in improving my teaching skills and saw this as an opportunity to possibly expand my teaching scope. I had little or no knowledge of peace education but was intrigued by the premise outlined in the course handout. The course was modular, including perceptions of poverty and development, education for peace in a gender perspective, peace education perspectives on security, human rights and dignity, education for a culture of peace and justice, conflict resolution, and an introduction to the concepts of violence and non-violence.
