Abstract
We present the main results of a documental research about the presence of the notion of scientific competence in the public education policy papers delivered by Colombian government between 1995 and 2010. The study includes a thorough revision of official documents, international agencies’ educative agendas and a survey with the participation of teachers from the public education sector nationwide. The research findings demonstrate that, while well-intended, the actual documents as an expression of the national scientific educational policy are far from being as strong and coherent as they should be for a country that wants to become an international referent for good educative practices. The text closes with a series of conclusions and recommendations for achieving such a goal.
