Abstract
Amitriptyline is an antidepressant with antianxiety action and a sedative component. Its precise mechanism is not known; it is not a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and it does not act primarily by stimulating the central nervous system. Amitriptyline is known to inhibit the membrane mechanism responsible for reuptake of norepinephrine into adrenergic neurons.
