An Overview Development of the Primate Visual System: From Photoreceptors to Cortical Modules

  • Chapter
The Visual System from Genesis to Maturity

Abstract

This overview is based on a series of longitudinal studies carried out in my laboratory over the last two decades on the developing rhesus monkey. Obviously, most of this work could not have been done without the enormous amount of factual and conceptual advances that have been made during this period in the understanding of visual development in other species. However, a scholarly analysis and comprehensive review of the appropriate literature on this subject is beyond the scope of this communication.
