Abstract
Bronchodilators are widely used in the therapy of COPD and provide modest relief of symptoms and increase the exercise tolerance. The pharmacology of bronchodilators is largely concerned with the relaxation of airway smooth muscle, although it is increasingly recognized that bronchodilators may also affect other cell types. This chapter discusses the molecular, biochemical and clinical pharmacology of bronchodilators currently used in the treatment of COPD and also describes some novel bronchodilators under development.
