Abstract
Many initiatives, coming in the wake of Project 2000, have made it plain that the education and professional preparation of nurses is at an important crossroads. A succession of documents emanating from the UKCC make it quite clear that the council envisages a ‘total and radical’ restructuring of nurse education. In the first of nine Project 2000 papers, the council stated that:
the aim will be to look at foundation training de novo, with no options foreclosed and with no proposals, however radical, eliminated without proper study. ... This re-look at training will need to take into account societal needs and be based on assumptions and perceptions about the role of those practitioners who undertake the functions of nursing, midwifery and health visiting. (UKCC 1985: 2).
