Abstract
This chapter is a review of what we know, or don’t know, about the prevalence of alcohol and drug use and abuse, and the relationship of psychopathology to these patterns. Our focus will be on studies of the general population, leaving the discussion of clinical populations to other chapters. Our current state of knowledge will be discussed within the context of definitional and methodologic difficulties encountered in studies of nonclinical populations.
