Abstract

In the future we can expect to see further improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori. The infection may eventually be prevented by immunization and hopefully also by improved public health. The indications for treatment in patients without ulcers are likely to expand and become more clearly defined. The new approaches to treatment may change the respective roles of the family practitioner and hospital-based gastroenterologist in the management of upper gastrointestinal diseases. The aim of this chapter is to describe some of the developments that are already underway and to discuss how further advances might come about.
