Abstract
It has been quite a shock to the system to discover that several of the gastroduodenal diseases that we thought we understood fairly well are actually caused by a bacterium; Helicobacter pylori. This book aims to explore the clinical implications of this remarkable discovery. But before we do — why didn’t someone discover this earlier? The question is worth asking because the answer might indicate how modern science can still discover the unexpected. Clearly we were looking in the wrong direction. Most of our minds were fixed on two simple concepts:
-
The stomach secretes acid to keep it sterile.
-
Too much acid causes ulcers.
