Abstract

There are many kinds of polymers which respond to environmental conditions. Such polymers vary their characteristics such as solubility and conformation with changing environmental conditions such as temperature1, solvent composition2, pH1b,3, ionic strength1b,4, and electric field5. For example, a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAAM) aqueous solution shows a phase transition with temperature, which is known as the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)6.
