Abstract
Darwinian evolution is the outcome of the interplay of reproduction, mutation, and natural selection. One of the most important and difficult problems in understanding the emergence of life is to pinpoint the necessary conditions for the onset od Darwinian evolution. The beautiful experiments of Biebricher and collaborators1 show that a form of it may arise in very simple systems, which cannot possibly be considered living.
