Abstract
The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) represents the end-stage manifestation of a prolonged infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Children and adolescents may contract AIDS from sexual contact with any infected person, following injection with contaminated blood, or from pre- or perinatal transmission.
