Abstract
When an intercalation compound forms, ions or molecules are accepted by a host lattice. This results primarily in geometrical effects directly manifested through lattice parameter variations. At the same time an electronic exchange takes place between host and guest species. In addition the intercalation reaction is a reversible one. It is possible to return to the initial state through appropriate electrical, chemical, or thermal actions. This means that no strong bonds have been created between guest and host, or broken in the host structure.
