Valence and Doorway Mechanisms in Resonance Neutron Capture

  • Chapter
Advances in Nuclear Physics

Abstract

Neutron reactions near threshold excite levels at 5–10 MeV in the compound nucleus. At these energies, Bohr’s compound nucleus model (Bo 36) was initially considered to provide an adequate description of the neutron interaction exhibiting narrow resonances in the scattering and capture cross sections. Since the wave functions of these resonances are highly complicated, their properties are expected to be described by statistical theory.
