Abstract
Hemicelluloses are among the most abundant biopolymers although they are not yet being used as materials. This study focused on isolating polymeric 4-O-methylglucuronoxylan, which is the most abundant heteropolysaccharide (hemicellulose) in aspen wood (Populus tremula). The wood chips were extracted sequentially with different liquids. The isolated xylan was analysed for carbohydratate composition, molecular weight and crystallinity. The alkali extraction procedure used is selective and yields a high xylose containing polymeric xylan from aspen wood. The xylan showed fair film forming properties, which were enhanced when the xylan was carboxymethylated in homogenous alkali solution. The carboxymethylated xylan was water soluble and formed excellent films which were partially crystalline.
