Abstract
This text has focused on the recognition and treatment of a range of substance-related difficulties. I have introduced the reader to a scheme for placing substances into categories based on the usual effects at the usual doses. This classification in turn has served as the basis for the discussion of the history, the pharmacology, and the recognition and treatment of emergency problems related to each of the categories of drugs. My hope has been to offer a book from which interested readers can gain greater general knowledge of substances of abuse and of dependence, and to develop a useful handbook for clinical situations.
