Abstract
In recent decades, the challenges facing families have become tremendously complex. Problems such as divorce, poverty, child abuse, teenage pregnancy, and juvenile crime are becoming more prevalent in society. Mental health professionals are recognizing the need to work with parents and families to maximize treatment outcomes for children. The purposes of this chapter are to review briefly some of the common approaches to working with parents and provide practical recommendations for doing so.
