Abstract
While it is clear that nurses conducting research examine many aspects of nursing, nursing, as a profession, must develop a research-based body of nursing practice knowledge. Therefore, the focus in this chapter is on clinical nursing practice research rather than on research related to nursing education or nursing administration (although many of the principles discussed apply equally well to these areas). Clinical nursing researchers need to exploit all available tools to aid the development of empirically based nursing practice. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of computer technology as one tool available to support clinical nursing research. It is not, however, our purpose to provide a comprehensive discussion of clinical nursing research.
