Investigation of Structure of Titanium Matrix Fiber Composites

  • Chapter
Titanium and Titanium Alloys

Abstract

When developing metal-base composites including those with a matrix of titanium and its alloys reinforced with fibers of boron, silicon carbide, etc., it is necessary to solve the problem of compatibility between the fiber and the matrix that determines the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. The difficulty involved in making the matrix and fiber compatible in these materials already arise at the stage of their production. This is due to the fact that while the composites are formed in a short period of time, the temperatures exceed the operating ones. Mutual diffusion between the elements of the matrix and fiber can occur under operating conditions, thereby impairing the properties of the composites.
