Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a major medical, personal, and public health problem. The United States National Commission on Diabetes estimates that five percent of Americans (more than ten million people) are affected by the condition. In the United States today, diabetes and its complications are the sixth most common cause of death. In 1974, 38,000 U.S. deaths were attributed directly to diabetes mellitus. As will be discussed later, diabetes is also a major cause of significant morbidity.
