Abstract

In old mathematics, the golden rule for manipulating numbers was to ensure that they all had a common denominator. So too with words, in that they must have a common root if they are to be manipulated. Close scrutiny of the topic which was assigned to me shows that each component of my title has a different base, so we must recognize this and try to compensate for it.

“Those who have dissected or inspected many bodies have at least learned to doubt; when others, who are ignorant of anatomy and do not take the trouble to attend to it are in no doubt at all.”

(Morgagni, 1761)
