Isolation of Steroidogenic Cell Subpopulations in the Follicular Theca of the Ovary in the Domestic Fowl

  • Chapter
Growth Factors and the Ovary

Abstract

The granulosa and the theca of the follicle are the principal source of steroid hormones in the ovary of the domestic fowl. The production of progesterone has been demonstrated in the granulosa layer, while the secretion of 17β-estradiol, testosterone and androstenedione has been found in the theca cells (1–4).
