Abstract
Brain ischemia has significant implications to the development of damage in patients undergoing stroke condition. In order to understand the mechanisms involved, a few animal models have been adopted. The Mongolian gerbil, having an incomplete circle of Willis, is widely used as a model for partial or complete ischemia (Levy and Brierley, 1974. Berry et al, 1975. Kobayashi et al, 1977. Mayevsky, 1978. Mies and Hossmann, 1983. Mayevsky et al, 1985). The disturbances of ion homeostasis in the brain under ischemia were recorded by a few groups using an extracellular K+ electrode and more recently, Ca+ electrode (Branston et al, 1977. Hansen and Zeuthen, 1981. Harris et al, 1981. Choki et al, 1984. Mayevsky et al, 1985. Mayevsky and Zarchin, 1987).
