Abstract
The measurements of emission lifetimes by means of time-resolved luminescence have been of great importance in the understanding of properties of electronic excited states of pure crystals as well as of defects in insulating crystals, as has been so clearly explained by Bassani in his talk at this conference. The availability of a perfectly stable, pulsed light source such as synchrotron radiation available from storage rings makes the measurements of lifetimes using the phase shift method competitive with other techniques utilizing the short light pulses available from lasers and fast electronics. In addition, synchrotron radiation has the advantage of tunability of the exciting radiation over a broad range of energies.
