Abstract
The clinical demonstration of hemodialysis as a treatment methodology (1,2) and the development of permanently implantable blood access cannulae (3) have evolved into a broadly based dialysis technology. In addition to the generally known use of hemodialysis in the amelioration of the effects of uremia, clinical dialysis has been used in the treatment of acute poisoning episodes, the reduction of serum barbiturate levels, and as a means of achieving rapid serum electrolyte balance (4).
