A Study of Capillarity and Mass Transport on the A12O3 Surface

  • Chapter
Sintering and Catalysis

Part of the book series: Materials Science Research ((MSR,volume 10))

Abstract

Periodic gratings were produced on single crystal A12O3 surfaces. Upon annealing the tendency of the gratings to facet was found to depend on the surface orientation. The rate of the decay of the amplitude of sinusoidal gratings and that of the width of the grain boundary grooving were measured as a function of temperature and orientation to give the rate constants of capillarity induced mass transport.
